Dance To The Rhythm Of Life / World Beat

The creation of World Beat began with the chance meeting of drummers Greg Errico and Shonosuke Okura at the Gallery Piazza in Sausalito, California. The question was asked... "what would happen musically if drummers from vastly different musical traditions were to record together unrehearsed?" The answer is a sound and spontaneity unfamiliar to the Western ear.

World Beat -- a title synonymous with the rhythms of the world. World Beat represents the music of many cultures. Off beat. Music not easily categorized. It is a recording project which displays drummers from diverse parts of the musical world creating music without the benefit of a common spoken language -- drummers communicating musical ideas through sign and body language. This CD was the recorded result of two days of rhythmic experimentation without the benefit of written music or pre-rehearsed songs. Vastly different drummers/musicians participating in a creative synthesis of sound. The music is distinctly tribal--global in its vocal inflections, rhythmic patterns and tonal quality.

World Beat is a compilation of primordial, futuristic musical expressions without neatly sewn boundaries or a quick, pop-like identification. This is what engages the listeners brain. The music is raw, exciting, on edge, and draws the listener into the momentary development and progression of sound. World Beat demonstrates a truly Avant Garde spontaneity. This CD is like a voyage, a journey. It is deeply and globally human, precisely because of its cultural synthesis.

Why World Beat is surprisingly so hard to categorically pinpoint is what makes it so unique, fresh and endearing. It is no wonder that periodically there are resurgences of music groups from the past--and it is only those who make a greater statement that survive commercially. It takes courage and sensitivity to create, and to allow others to create with you. The respect for each others contributions and high degree of listening amongst the drummers are evident in this project.
