Stephen Paley had a big impact on how Sly & the Family Stone appeared to the public. He photographed many of their album covers personally, including Dance to the Music and Greatest Hits as well as many of their publicity shots. He also hired and supervised the photographers who shot the covers for There's a Riot Goin' On (Don Hunstein), Fresh (Richard Avedon), and Small Talk (Norman Seef).

He went to work for Epic in 1970 and was Sly & the Family Stone's A&R man until 1976, during which time he also worked with Jeff Beck, Rupert Holmes and the group Looking Glass, who had a hit with the song "Brandy." He was also Sly's Best Man at his 1974 Madison Square Garden wedding to Kathy Silva, as well as the person who conceived the idea of holding the wedding on stage in the first place! Steve stayed in contact with Sly through the early 80's, until he went on to head the Music Departments at Orion Pictures and The Ladd Company, where he supervised the music for the film "Blade Runner" and was responsible for the Academy Award-winning "Arthur's Theme," and "That's What Friends Are For," which won the Grammy as Best Song of the Year.
Most recently, Steve has been writing and producing arts and entertainment features for National Public Radio. His radio program on the renowned opera singer, Maria Callas, has won several awards and has been heard all over the world. Steve has also written and produced radio programs celebrating the careers of arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle, "Laura" composer and film scorer David Raskin, and Atlantic Records' 40th anniversary.
For the past seven years, he has been writing and compliling "Crossroads of the World," a comprehensive pictorial history of New York's Times Square, for which he received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. He also was recently featured on an E! TV special about actor Anthony Perkins, as Tony was a dear friend and mentor to Steve.
