| Rusty Allen was the bassist who replaced Larry Graham in 1972. He had big shoes to fill, and though he was only 19 at the time, managed to fill them and then some. He carried on the slap/pop technique of bass playing which Larry Graham pioneered with Sly & the Family Stone, and found creative and FUNKY ways to use this style in Sly's music. Rusty played with Sly until 1975, and you can hear him on Fresh, Small Talk, and High On You. He has also played on albums by The Temptations, Rose Stone and Robin Trower. |
| Rusty continues to be a part of the music industry: he is currently producing several rap/r&b acts in the Bay Area and is also working closely with renowned performer Bobby Womack. Aside from bass duties, Rusty is also Bobby's bandleader and helps with other things like song arrangements. Rusty described Sly's creative genius as "a bottomless well of musical ideas." When asked about the impact his bass playing on Sly's groundbreaking work has had on American popular music, Rusty said: "At the time I had no idea of the impact of what we were doing. I was just 19 years old, a youngster tryin' to hang." Be sure to keep your eyes on the web site for more details about Rusty's latest musical endeavors. |
