Love City #16: Larry on "Today Show" (NYC), Greg at Fieldstone, CA

"I wrote that song after I went to Africa. I loved
it there. All the animals were playin' cool with
each other ... here people kill animals for sport.
I felt more comfortable in the jungle than I do here.
In the jungle you know exactly what your enemy looks
like. Here, your enemy could look just like you."

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the 16th issue of "Love City" which I hope
was sent out in time .... It turns out that Larry Graham,
Chaka Khan and The Artist Formerly Known as Prince
will be performing tomorrow (Friday)
morning live on the Today Show (NBC) at 7 AM. For those
of you who live near New York City, you should try to
catch this free concert which will most likely be on
the street near Times Square. It should be funk-kay!
No doubt this concert will be to promote the new music
coming from this trio, and just
announced on The Artist's official web site
(http://www.love4oneanother.com/) is their song lineup
for the show: "Free" (a new GCS song on the new album),
"Sweet Thing" and the classic GCS tune "Release Yourself."
Also announced are tour dates for next week
(Indianapolis, Baton Rouge and Montgomery) as well as
a future appearance on Sinbad's VIBE show (June 8th).

The NewPowerSoul single "The One" is now getting radio airplay
and should be available in record stores any day now.
As you may already know, Larry will be releasing a new
Graham Central Station album next month entitled "GCS 2000"
and will also be appearing on a new NewPowerSoul album
(both of which can be ordered by calling 1-800-NEWFUNK).
At the recent NewPowerSoul concert at Irving Plaza,
folks from Paisley Park were handing out sampler cassettes
for these future releases. Here's the track listing:

Side One: "FREE" - LARRY GRAHAM; "This Crazy Life Of Mine" -
Chaka Khan; "Push It Up" - The NPG with Doug E. Fresh; "YOU MOVE
ME" - LARRY GRAHAM; "Am I Happy?" - Chaka Khan; "Mad Sex" - The
NPG; "WE'VE BEEN WAITING '98" - LARRY GRAHAM (a new version of the
     1974 GCS song)

Side Two: "The Drama of All Time" - Chaka Khan; "Until You're
Back In My Arms Again" - The NPG; "SOMEBODY 2 LOVE" - LARRY
GRAHAM; "Journey 2 the Center of Your Heart" - Chaka Khan; "Come
On" - The NPG; "The One" - The NPG; "(GOT MY GROOVE ON) BABY
     LET'S GO" - LARRY GRAHAM

I have also uploaded to the site a recent article by Jim Walsh
about Larry: check http://www.gcsweb.org/Articles/funk_express.html.

I also found out that drummer Greg Errico will be getting down live
several times in the next few weeks. You can see him perform with
Gary Duncan's Quicksilver Messenger Service this weekend (May 30th) at
the 2nd Annual Fieldstone Winery Music Festival in Healdsburg,
Calfornia. They will then perform at the Altamont racetrack in
Livermore Valley, CA on Saturday, June 20. If you are nearby you must
see Greg's skillz live! He is just as bad now as he was on all
those classic Sly & the Family Stone recordings.

I should also point out some new additions to the Sly & the Family
Stone and Graham Central Station web sites. Thanks to Matt Nowinski,
there are now AVI video clips of rare live performances on both sites!

Check: http://www.slyfamstone.com/inconcert.html
and:	http://www.gcsweb.org/gcslive.html

The GCS performances are from German TV and the Sly & the Family Stone
performance is from the TV show "Rockin' in the USA" and broadcast in
1974. There will also soon be some MPEG video clips on both sites,
courtesy of Jens Samuelsson. Thanks guys!

Also new to the Sly & the Family Stone web site is a revamped
list of songs which contain Sly & the Family Stone samples.
It has a few new additions and now looks much more slick.

Well, that's about it for now. Enjoy!

Take care,
Jon Dakss
